A Zoom Night With Dominic Fike

Last night, around 10:30pm CST, those loyal fans who had previously signed up for Dominic Fike’s text blast list, were greeted with a message reading from the singer reading, “WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG EXCLUSIVE LISTENING SESSION”, accompanied with a link. Having already released a video earlier that day featuring himself and friends skydiving and discussing life, not much else was expected.

Lucky for me, I was on my phone at the time and immediately clicked to see where the link would take me. Soon after, I was navigated to the App Store to download the Zoom app. Not wanting to waste time downloading Zoom, I rushed over to my iPad that already had the app installed. Unsure of what to expect, as Dominic made no mention earlier in the day that a listening party was looming, I simply stared at the screen wondering what would happen next.

After a few minutes of waiting, I began to believe that I didn’t make it in to the event as those on Twitter were saying only 300 people are allowed into a Zoom call at once. Letting a few more moments pass wondering if my waiting was in vain, I was finally let into the call to the image of Dominic in the studio moving around with obvious jitters due to the excitement of the upcoming release of his album comprised of three years of work.

As we all entered the call, Mr. Fike made fans promise not to leak any of the songs because he would see on Instagram as he jokingly stated how he “knows [our] names and faces and will talk to the people at Instagram to get our pages taken down”. After giving this warning, Dominic laid out the tracklist for night - “Superstar Sh*t”, “Cancel Me”, and “Vampire”. Pressing play on “Superstar Sh*t”, our speakers were filled with what is now a solidified DFike which encapsulates good vibes, catchy melodies, and layered honesty. Fans danced, Dominic danced. It was beautiful. Moving on to “Cancel Me”, we were met with a bit more vulnerability as the singer talked about some of the downfalls of fame. Though incredibly thankful for his success, he explored another world where he wasn’t famous and didn’t have to handle the personal changes that come with it - mainly focusing on not being as close with family and the temptations that occur in relationships. After taking a few seconds to let “Cancel Me” marinate, we moved on to “Vampire”. This track has more of a rock influence evident from the introductory guitar riffs almost seeming to be a homage to Fike’s love of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As the beats picked up, the chat went crazy with praise while others got up from their seats to really feel the music.

Not wanting to wrap up so quickly, as everyone was truly enjoying the moment, Fike proposed to play some more songs. This time he asked us, the fans, to choose which ones we wanted to hear. The chat responded with overwhelming requests for “Why” and “Joe Blazey” to Dom’s amusement as he asked through a huge grin, “Why does everyone wanna hear ”Why” again?”. Unable to choose just one, we were spoiled with both!

“Why” has been a highly anticipated track ever since Dominic releases a snippet of the song accompanied with a video montage life update. The song being perfect to just chill to, drive down a long road into the sunset, or have an impromptu dance party in a field of flower, it is sure to bring the best vibes to whoever’s ears it meets.

As the intimate gathering closed with “Joe Blazey”, fans began to express how much they loved the songs and being able to take part in the event. When the song ended, Dom un-muted a few of the people present and it was a beautiful to hear a mismatched chorus of praise, love, and encouragement. For listeners these moments are truly special and definitely brightness many of our days. For Dominic, I think it was special for him as he had the chance to see some of his supporters, express his gratitude, and and let out some of those pre-debut album anxieties.

Be sure to check out the album tonight at midnight on all streaming platforms because, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
