How Euphoria Reinvented The Makeup Industry

The three time award winning show, Euphoria, has caught all of our eyes at one point or another. Maybe it was over the quarantine or maybe it was when new episodes would air every Sunday on HBO. Either way, there was something about it that made the show seem so phenomenally different than all of the other teen dramas. Maybe it was the fact that everyone in the cast is so goddamn attractive, maybe it was the impeccable cinematography, or maybe it was Euphoria's envision of makeup that drew you in.

One of the most amazing things about the show Euphoria is its ability to use makeup as a statement for its characters. Doniella Davy, the mastermind makeup artist behind Euphoria, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Moonlight (aka Oscar winning pieces of cinema), decided to stray away from her usual “face-blending” style for her later work seen in Euphoria. Wanting the makeup to be a moniker for each of the show’s characters, Davy explains in an interview with Variety how she used glitter for Rue, a character played by Zendaya, by stating, "She still has some glitter on her eyes from Halloween which is a choice that Sam (director of Euphoria) and I made to just kind of show that she hasn't really abused herself since then. It's so realistic, that glitter just doesn't fully get washed away so you still see these little glitter bits, like raccoon eyes from glitter and mascara”. For Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, Davy wanted viewers to see her use of makeup as armor due to “growing up as a pageant girl” who so “deeply ingrained this idea of using makeup to present this confident sense of herself to the world”. Maddy’s look has definitely re-popularized the use of rhinestones in eye looks as seen when she “goes through this painstakingly, precise process of applying individual rhinestones or a trail of rhinestones, she does that and it's not random, it’s for a specific reason, it's who she is”.

Continuing in the fashion of using makeup to mark important character development, Davy brings to light the transformation Kat goes through, “She learns how to embrace her sexuality and pushes that farther and realizes that she can use that as a tool”.

Lastly she alludes to the fact that Jules' makeup was specially inspired by what people of Generation Z are doing for their makeup: "When I interviewed with Sam, he talked about all these YouTube and Instagram videos, so I got right to Instagram and started going down rabbit holes and finding one person with amazing, Gen Z 18 year old girl with all of these amazing looks. All of a sudden I'm following all of these different accounts and devouring the ways in which Gen Z has been using makeup to express themselves in such a bold and brave way. It really inspired me, the idea of "oh there are no rules" and yes of course this person can wear neon green eyeliner and gems to school, why wouldn't they?"

As the season went on, you might have noticed that some of the character's started wearing more makeup. This is because the lighting of the show is quite moody, dark and euphoric spurring the makeup team to create looks that were easy to see in that lighting so they used lots of rhinestones, electric and neon colors and of course... glitter.

Generation Z is a huge part of the show’s viewer demographic and the fact it was this group who were the unknown inspiration for Davy’s Euphoria makeup goes to show that this generation is full of authentic trendsetters.

Overall, the message of Euphoria's makeup is to convey self expression. With that in mind, the show has truly inspired a lot of the Generation Z community to go experimenting with this idea of going wild and out of the box with the idea of makeup. Hundreds of TikToker's have participated in the Euphoria’s Still Don't Know My Name challenge, proving that you don't have to be a makeup artist to be good at makeup.

Halloween is coming soon, everyone pretty much knows about the cinematic excellence that is Euphoria by now, and I'm sure you have thought about at least once how cool it would be to have a certain character's makeup. Well now is your chance! Have some fun this Halloween and learn how to create your favorite character's makeup look for a night of euphoric expression. We all deserve to have a "night out on the town" moment even in this dreadful pandemic. Go crazy, go stupid. Go insane. Don't be afraid to go out of the box. I say... the brighter, the sparklier, the better. Use brightly colored eyeshadow, iridescent highlighter, stars, rhinestones, and overall... lots and lots of body glitter.
